Are you an experienced legal professional who thrives in international settings and values strong partnership, mutual respect, and meaningful impact? At RWE, we are looking for a Senior Legal Counsel who combines legal excellence with emotional intelligence, curiosity, and a collaborative spirit. You will join a diverse and supportive global team working to drive RWEs offshore wind ambitions, with a focus on Japan.
In this role, youll be part of a dynamic Legal Department that works closely across regions and disciplines. Youll interact daily with engaged colleagues from the wider RWE Legal community and partner with both technical and commercial business teams to provide seamless, practical guidance that enables our offshore wind projects to succeed worldwide.
About the role
You will play a pivotal part in shaping the legal foundation of RWEs Offshore Wind business:
Act as a trusted legal partner for RWEs activities in Japan and across global markets.
Support the full project lifecycle—from development to construction and operations—across regulatory, corporate, joint venture, finance, procurement, and commercial matters.
Advise, draft, and independently negotiate high-impact strategic agreements, including:
Joint venture arrangements (bidding agreements, shareholder agreements, service agreements)
Project financing transactions
Procurement and construction agreements (e.g., turbine supply, EPC(I), maritime logistics/BIMCO, port usage etc.)
Coordinate and integrate input from both internal and external experts to deliver clear, pragmatic, and cost-effective solutions.
Proactively advise senior stakeholders on risks, claims, and disputes within your remit.
Champion process improvements and help enhance team-wide collaboration, efficiency, and consistency.
Contribute creative, well-balanced solutions to complex legal challenges. Balanced solutions to complex legal challenges.
Build strong, cross-cultural relationships—working with colleagues across departments, regions, and the wider RWE Group.
Job requirements and experience
Were looking for a colleague who enjoys collaboration, values diverse perspectives, and is energised by working in a supportive, international environment.
Fully qualified lawyer in Japan with strong legal skills and experience across civil and common law jurisdictions, ideally including construction, corporate, commercial transactions, regulatory & public policy and/or project finance.
At least 5-8 years of post-qualification experience in a leading law firm or industry-leading in-house role.
A team-oriented mindset and enthusiasm for contributing to international projects with cross-functional teams.
Ability to balance priorities, navigate change, and approach challenges with confidence, composure, and a practical, solution-oriented outlook.
Strong commercial and technical acumen combined with strategic thinking.
Excellent communication skills, emotional intelligence, and a positive, collaborative approach.
Comfortable working independently while thriving in diverse, global teams - building trust across cultures and time zones.
Ability to balance Japanese law and practices with international standards (FIDIC style contracts) and common law concepts.
Fluency in Japanese and English; additional languages welcome. Openness to international travel as needed.
